. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Steve Carlton, who belatedly appeared to be regaining his 1969 form, when he won 17 games for the Cardinals, pitched a four-hitter and beat the the Phillies, 6-3, for his second straight victory and ninth of the season against 18 defeats. Carlton fell behind in the first inning when Denny Doyle walked and Deron Johnson homered, but the Cardinals tied the score in the second and went ahead in the seventh when Carlton and Lou Brock doubled. Dick Allen, back in the lineup for the first time since August 14, homered in the eighth. Carlton singled and drove in one of the Cardinals' last pair in the ninth. Joe Lis homered in the Phillies' half. [The Sporting News]
