The Mets lost to the Cardinals, 5-2, and dropped out of a first place tie in the East division, one-half game behind the idle Pirates. Tom Seaver was the loser, although striking out 10 in six innings to bring his season's total to 274, a new N. L. record for a righthanded pitcher.

The Cardinals jumped on Seaver for four runs in the fourth on a single by Joe Hague, pass to Joe Torre, double by Jose Cardenal, single by Carl Taylor, walk to Ted Simmons and a wild throw by Jerry Grote when the Redbirds worked a double steal. Bob Gibson, gaining his 21st victory, shut out the Mets until the ninth when Wayne Garrett walked, Cleon Jones singled, Dave Marshall doubled and Ken Boswell hit a sacrifice fly for their two runs.
