Going into overtime in both games, the Royals shocked the Athletics by sweeping pair of a 8-7 victories in a doubleheader. In the opener, the A's took a 7-6 lead in the 11th inning, but the Royals rallied to win with two runs on a single by Pat Kelly, a pass to Ed Kirkpatrick and a triple by Lou Piniella.

The nightcap was decided in the 12th. Jackie Hernandez singled with one out and when Rich Severson followed with a grounder, both runners were safe on a fielder's choice. Kirkpatrick then singled to drive in the winning run. [The Sporting News]
