Joe Torre smashed a homer in the 13th inning to give the Cardinals a 5-4 victory over the Mets, who were forced to mark time, one-half game behind the Pirates in the East division race. Joe Hague batted in the Cardinals' first four runs, hitting a homer with two men on base in the third inning and getting another RBI with a single in the fifth.

The Mets, who got one run back in the third, rallied to tie the score in their half of the fifth. Consecutive singles by Cleon Jones, Wayne Garrett and Art Shamsky produced one run. Donn Clendenon doubled for another tally and Jerry Grote laid down a sacrifice bunt to plate the tying run. [The Sporting News]
