After winning the day game, 7-5, with the aid of a grand-slam homer by Leo Cardenas, the Twins were forced to settle for a split when the Angels erupted for five runs in the ninth inning to take the night game, 5-3. The day game was scheduled because of the previous night's postponement and only 699 fans turned out in 55-degree weather. The night contest drew 8,383.

Cardenas' grand slam in the second inning of the day game followed three walks issued by Tom Bradley. However, the Angels came back to tie the score before the Twins posted their winning runs on a bases-loaded single by Jim Holt in the sixth.

With Rich Reese hitting a homer and a triple, the Twins held a 3-0 lead in the night game going into the ninth inning when the Angels started their rally with a single by Jarvis Tatum and a pass to Sandy Alomar. Ron Perranoski replaced Tom Hall and was tagged for three singles that produced the tying runs. Stan Williams, who was the winner in relief in the afternoon game, then took over, but Tony Gonzalez doubled to drive in the winning pair for the Angels. [The Sporting News]
