Catfish Hunter, who doubled and scored what proved to be the winning run, defeated the Angels, 2-1, to become the first Athletics' pitcher to win 17 games since the club left Philadelphia in 1955. The previous high was 16 victories by Bud Daley in Kansas City in 1959 and '60 and 16 by Blue Moon Odom in Oakland in 1968.

The A's scored their first run in the fifth when Bert Campaneris walked and Joe Rudi doubled for the only hit off Greg Garrett, who pitched the first six innings for the Angels. Hunter doubled off Eddie Fisher in the seventh and scored on another double by Campaneris. The Angels picked up their run in the eighth when Tony Gonzalez singled and Alex Johnson doubled.
