Three homers were not enough for the Cubs, who lost to the Expos, 6-4, and slipped two games behind the Pirates in the East division race. Billy Williams and Jim Hickman homered in the first inning, Williams' blow coming with Glenn Beckert on base, to give the Cubs a 3-0 lead. Steve Renko, the Expos' starting pitcher, hit for the circuit in the third, but Joe Pepitone restored the Cubs' three-run lead with a boundary belt in the seventh.

The Expos picked up a run in their half on a single by Ron Fairly, double by John Bateman and sacrifice fly by Marv Staehle. Singles by Jim Gosger, Rusty Staub and Bob Bailey produced a run to open the Expos' rally in the eighth. Fergie Jenkins, making his first relief appearance of the season, was greeted with a double by Fairly, Staub and Bailey scoring to put the Expos ahead.
