After giving up two hits and two runs in the first inning, Ron Reed yielded only two more hits over the rest of the route and pitched the Braves to an 11-2 victory the over Reds. The Braves broke the game wide open with five runs in the second. Reed walked with the bases loaded to force in the first run. Ralph Garr doubled to drive in two. After the sacks were filled again, Rico Carty walked to force in a run and Orlando Cepeda hit a sacrifice fly for the fifth tally of the stanza.
