The Phillies erupted for three runs in the 10th inning and defeated the Cardinals, 7-4, to sweep the three-game series. Steve Carlton was saved from being the Cardinals' first 20-game loser in 50 years when his teammates rallied for three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to tie the score at 4-4.

In the 10th, with Harry Parker on the mound, Larry Bowa beat out a bunt and raced from first to third when Tony Taylor grounded to Joe Torre. Tom Hilgendorf replaced Parker and walked Don Money intentionally. Jim Hutto wrecked the move with a double, scoring Bowa. Ron Stone followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Money.
