The Pirates, who were held to two hits by Jerry Koosman and lost the opener of a doubleheader, 4-1, came back to beat the Mets in the nightcap, 9-5, in 10 innings. As a result of the split, the Pirates boosted their lead to two games over the Cubs in the East division race, while the Mets remained 3½ games in arrears.

Koosman retired the first 15 batters before Jose Pagan led off the sixth inning with a homer for the Pirates' run. The Mets scored once in the third when Tommie Agee was hit by a pitch, Wayne Garrett singled and Cleon Jones lofted a sacrifice fly. A walk, a double by Ken Boswell and single by Bud Harrelson added a pair in the fourth and Donn Clendenon wrapped up the Mets' victory with a homer in the eighth.

In the second game, the Pirates built up a 5-2 lead, but the Mets got a homer from Boswell in the sixth and tied the score in the seventh with a double by Jones, a walk and singles by Ron Swoboda and Harrelson. Willie Stargell shattered the tie with a homer in the 10th. Manny Sanguillen singled and was sacrificed to second.
