Two homers -- one that tied the score in the ninth inning and another that won the game in the 10th -- powered the Mets to a 6-3 victory and moved them into a tie with the Cubs for second place in the East division.

The Mets picked up their initial run in the first inning. Leroy Stanton led off with a triple and was hit on the head by the throw from the outfield, forcing him to leave the game. Rod Gaspar took over and, after a walk, scored while the Cubs were executing a double play. Tommy Davis smashed a homer with two on base to put the Cubs ahead in the sixth and Ken Holtzman protected the 3-1 advantage until the ninth, when Cleon Jones singled and Donn Clendenon tied the score with a circuit clout. In the 10th, with Hoyt Wilhelm on the hill, Jerry Grote doubled, Dave Marshall walked and Wayne Garrett homered with two out to win the game. [The Sporting News]
