Playing overtime in both games, the Orioles swept a twi-night doubleheader with the Senators, winning the opener in 10 innings, 3-2, and taking the nightcap by the same 3-2 score in 11 innings. Brooks Robinson hit a sacrifice fly the for 1,000th RBI of his career to account for the Orioles' initial run in the second inning of the lidlifter. Don Buford tied the score at 2-2 with a homer in the eighth. In the 10th, Bobby Grich singled, Terry Crowley and Buford walked to load the bases and Mark Belanger hit a sacrifice fly to win the game.

The Orioles trailed in second the game, 2-0, until rallying to tie the score in the ninth on singles by Baylor and Davey Johnson, a throwing error on a bunt and a sacrifice fly by Johnny Oates. Curt Motton walked in the 11th, stopped at second on a single by Andy Etchebarren and scored to complete the sweep when Frank Robinson doubled.
