. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Fergie Jenkins allowed only two hits and pitched the Cubs into second place in the East division with a 4-1 victory over the Mets, who were forced to settle for third place after winning the world championship in 1969. Ken Singleton was the only Met batter to hit safely against Jenkins, rapping doubles in the seventh and ninth innings.

The Cubs scored two runs in the second on a single by Randy Hundley after filling the bases on a single by Joe Pepitone, double by Jim Hickman and a walk. Jenkins gave up the Mets' counter in the third on a pass to Bud Harrelson, a sacrifice and two wild pitches. The Cubs iced their victory in the sixth when Billy Williams singled and Pepitone homered.
