. . . where the 1970s live forever!

The largest opening-game crowd in Detroit's history, 54,089, saw the Tigers defeat the Indians, 8-2, in 47-degree weather. Jim Northrup, playing first base for the first time in his career, batted in two runs with a triple in the fourth inning and scored himself on a single by Willie Horton. Steve Hargan pitched for the Indians in the absence of Sam McDowell, who was called home by a death in his family. [The Sporting News]
