Winning an opener at Shea Stadium for the first time in their history, the Mets defeated the Expos, 4-2, in a game called with two out in the home half of the fifth inning after the 40-mile wind turned a steady rain into sleet. The bad weather held the crowd to 26,062.

Tom Seaver, who outpitched Carl Morton, allowed only four hits, but two of his four walks led to Expos' runs on a single by Ron Fairly in the third inning.
