Willie Mays hit his fourth homer in four games and Dick Dietz also connected for the circuit, both blows coming with a man on base, to pace the Giants to a 6-4 victory over the Cardinals before an opening-day crowd of 26,841 in Busch Stadium. Frank Reberger, who was the winner with the help of Jerry Johnson, singled home the Giants' fifth and deciding run in the sixth inning. Joe Torre hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals.
