Curt Blefary hit an inside-the-park homer to win the first game of a doubleheader for the Yankees, 1-0, but the right fielder's error enabled the Senators to come back and take the second game, 4-3. Steve Kline pitched a shutout for Yankees, his first in the major leagues.

The Senators, who had been held scoreless for 23 straight innings by Yankee pitchers, broke the drouth in the nightcap when Elliott Maddox singled and Frank Howard doubled for a run in the sixth. After two walks, Bernie Allen singled, driving in two runs to tie the score at 3-3, and when Blefary bobbled the ball, Richie Scheinblum scored from first base with the winning tally.
