The Cardinals won the first game of a doubleheader with Bob Gibson pitching, 4-2, and the Giants came back behind Juan Marichal to take the second game, 7-2. Gibson's decision was his sixth straight over the Giants since September 17, 1968. The Giants' runs counted on consecutive homers by George Foster and Bobby Bonds in the eighth inning. The Cardinals had successive homers by Joe Torre and Jose Cardenal for their runs off Marichal in the sixth inning. Willie Mays, who sat out the opener, was stopped on his homer streak in the nightcap, but the Giants' superstar smashed a triple and double to continue his hot hitting. [The Sporting News] |
