Wilbur Wood, making his first start for the White Sox since August 10, 1968, after 176 relief appearances, yielded only three hits in 7 2/3 innings but lost to the Angels, 3-2. Wood, leading, 2-1, issued his only walk of the game to Jim Spencer to open the eighth and then retired the next two batters, but Jim Fregosi came up as a pinch-hitter and doubled to drive in pinch-runner Roger Repoz. Vicente Romo relieved Wood and was greeted with a single by Sandy Alomar, scoring pinch-runner Clyde Wright with the winning tally. [The Sporting News]
