Denny Doyle singled with the bases loaded in the eighth inning for his third hit of the game and drove in two runs to enable the Phillies to defeat the Pirates, 6-5. Willie Montanez and Deron Johnson opened the inning with singles and, with two out, moved into scoring position on a wild pitch by Dave Giusti.
