The surprises of the early season, the Expos swept a doubleheader with the Reds, 3-2 and 5-3, and moved into first place in the East division for the first time in the expansion club's three-year history. In the lidlifter, the Expos gained their victory with a two-run rally in the seventh inning. After singles by Ron Brand and Rusty Staub and a pass to Bob Bailey loaded the bases, Clyde Mashore, who formerly was in the Reds' organization, cracked a single to drive in the tying and winning runs.

Staub was the Expos' hero in the nightcap. Le Grande Orange homered with a man on base in the first inning, scored another run on a single by Ron Fairly in the fifth and doubled to drive in Ron Hunt in the seventh. Bill Stoneman limited the Reds to six hits. [The Sporting News]
