Gary Gentry allowed only one hit and pitched the Mets to a 5-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader before Bob Johnson, who formerly belonged to the Mets, hurled the Pirates to a 2-1 victory in the second game. Roberto Clemente tripled in the sixth inning for the only hit off Gentry, but it helped the Pirates take a 2-1 lead. Richie Hebner, who walked, scored on the three-bagger and Clemente followed across the plate on a sacrifice fly by Willie Stargell. However, Cleon Jones homered with a man on base in the Mets' half of the sixth and Tommie Agee added a run with a circuit clout in the eighth.

Johnson, who pitched a six-hitter, was the winner when the Pirates broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the ninth on a pass to Hebner, an infield out and a single by Stargell. [The Sporting News]
