The Twins, who went into the ninth inning with a 5-1 lead, survived a three-run rally by the Royals to emerge with a 5-4 victory. Lou Piniella and Bob Oliver singled and Paul Schaal doubled for the first run in the Royals' uprising, knocking out Jim Perry. Ron Perranoski relieved and struck out Carl Taylor, but Jerry May followed with a two-run double. However, after Dennis Paepke walked, Freddie Patek grounded into a game-ending double play.
