Pete Mikkelsen, relieving to face Johnny Bench with two men on base and two out in the ninth inning, struck out the slugger to save the Dodgers' 5-4 victory over the Reds. Bench had previously smashed a homer and two singles. The Dodgers, who had a three-run homer by Tom Haller, broke a 4-4 tie in the ninth. Haller walked and gave way to pinch-runner Bobby Valentine, who stole second and scored on a single by Manny Mota.
