Unearned runs decided the split of a doubleheader with the Padres winning the first game, 3-2, and the Braves taking the second game, 4-3. In the opener, Cito Gaston reached second base on a wild throw by Marty Perez in the sixth inning and scored what proved to be the Padres' winning run on a single by Larry Stahl.

Hank Aaron, favoring a sore knee, sat on the Braves' bench in the nightcap until the tenth inning when he came up as a pinch-hitter with the bases loaded and rifled a grounder off Enzo Hernandez' arm for an error as Orlando Cepeda scored the winning run. There were six homers in the twinbill, including the first of Ralph Garr's career with the Braves. [The Sporting News]
