With a helping hand from Clay Carroll, who pitched the last two innings, Gary Nolan gained his first victory of the season when the Reds defeated the Padres, 6-1. The Reds' runs included a theft of home by Johnny Bench in a double steal with Tommy Helms. The Padres' run came on Don Mason's second major league homer. Mason hit his first while with the Giants June 24, 1966, and that also came in a loss to the Reds. [The Sporting News]
