The Padres misplayed a bunt in the ninth inning and, as a result, lost to the Reds, 6-5. Tommy Helms singled to open the frame and gave way on the paths to Frank Duffy. Woody Woodward bunted to Nate Colbert, who threw late to second.

When Enzo Hernandez threw wildly returning the ball to first, the runners advanced an extra base. After Bill Plummer struck out, the Padres walked Pete Rose intentionally. Dave Concepcion forced Duffy at the plate, but Tony Perez singled to score Woodward with the Reds' winning run. [The Sporting News]
