One rookie pitcher saved another when the Indians defeated the Athletics, 2-1. Steve Dunning, who struck out 13 batters, faltered with one out in the ninth inning and gave up singles by Gene Tenace and Dick Green. Chuck Machemehl relieved and saved the game by inducing Bert Campaneris to ground into a double play. The Indians scored what proved to be the winning run on an obstruction play when Tenace, the A's catcher, bumped into Graig Nettles, who was caught in a rundown between third and home.
