The Indians not only went down to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Royals, but also lost the services of Steve Hargan for an indefinite period when the pitcher suffered a hairline fracture of his right ankle in a fall while covering first base in the fifth inning. Lou Piniella, Royals' outfielder, also was hurt in the previous frame, suffering a fracture of the knuckle on his right thumb when hit by a pitched ball.
