The relief pitching of Al Severinsen enabled the Padres to win the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 5-1, but the Braves came back to take the second game, 3-1. The Padres were leading, 2-1, in the eighth inning when Dave Roberts was lifted after loading the bases with one out. Severinsen, making his 16th appearance of the season, quelled the threat by getting pinch-hitter Hank Aaron to ground into a double play. The Padres then iced the decision with three runs in their half of the eighth, two counting on a homer by Nate Colbert.
