Mel Stottlemyre issued only three walks, but all came in the eighth inning when the Twins scored three runs to defeat the Yankees, 5-3. George Mitterwald drew the first pass. Danny Thompson sacrificed and Cesar Tovar singled, scoring pinch-runner Paul Powell.

After Rod Carew was retired, Tony Oliva and Brant Alyea both walked to load the bases and Steve Braun then singled, driving in two runs to provide the Twins' winning margin. [The Sporting News]
