The second duel of the season between Tom Seaver and Bob Gibson ended again in favor of the Mets' ace, who defeated the Cardinals, 3-1. The Cards counted their run in the first inning on a single by Lou Brock, a stolen base, infield hit by Ted Simmons and sacrifice fly by Joe Torre. The Mets pulled even in the seventh on a triple by Bud Harrelson and wild pitch by Gibson.

Ed Kranepool doubled in the eighth and scored the tie-breaking run on another two-bagger by Jerry Grote, who also crossed the plate when Ted Sizemore missed connections with a grounder by Seaver.
