The Padres exploded for six runs in the first inning, including a bases-loaded triple by Ed Spiezio, and defeated the Reds, 7-2, behind the pitching of Clay Kirby, who struck out 12 to equal the San Diego club record.

Dave Campbell homered to ignite the Padres' outburst. After three walks, Spiezio hit his triple. Bob Barton capped the inning with a homer. Campbell connected for the circuit again in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
