With Catfish Hunter and Vida Blue pitching four-hitters, the Athletics defeated the Orioles in a doubleheader, 6-2 and 2-1. The A's won the first game with four runs in the sixth inning, helped by Mike Cuellar's wildness. Cuellar walked three and gave up a run-scoring single by Hunter before being removed. Another run was forced in on pass issued by Jim Hardin. Tom Dukes then took over and two more counted on a sacrifice fly by Reggie Jackson and an error.

Blue turned in his eighth consecutive complete-game victory in a duel with Jim Palmer. The A's scored their runs in the seventh after Joe Rudi singled and took third on a single by Jackson. Palmer uncorked a wild pitch, Rudi scoring, and when EAndy tchebarren made a wild throw to the plate, Mark Belanger and Brooks Robinson collided going after the loose ball and Jackson raced home with the A's deciding run.
