Doug Rader, who was batting only .154 going into the game, smashed a homer off Tom Seaver in the sixth inning to help the Astros beat the Mets, 5-4. Roger Metzger and Joe Morgan opened the frame with singles and, after two out, Denis Menke singled to score Metzger. Rader followed with his first homer of the season.

The Astros, however, needed another run to win and got it in the seventh when Cleon Jones misplayed a liner by Metzger for a two-base error and Morgan singled. Ed Kranepool and Ken Boswell hit back-to-back homers in the Mets' half of the seventh. [The Sporting News]
