The Royals lost the first game of a doubleheader, 4-2, because of a botched-up double play, but came slugging back to defeat the Athletics in the second game, 10-4. In the seventh inning of the opener, with the score tied, 2-2, the A's had Dick Green on first base when Chuck Dobson grounded to Paul Schaal, who attempted to start a double play. However, Freddie Patek missed tagging second base and his throw to Gail Hopkins at first was wide, both runners being safe. Bert Campaneris and Reggie Jackson followed with run-scoring singles.

In the nightcap, Schaal hit a two-run homer, but the Royals trailed until exploding for four runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth. [The Sporting News]
