Although the Cardinals jumped off to a 5-2 lead, Bob Gibson was unable to maintain his advantage and lost to the Dodgers, 6-5. The Dodgers tied the score with the aid of two unearned runs and then beat Gibson in the eighth inning when Duke Sims doubled and Bobby Valentine singled to drive in pinch-runner Von Joshua.
