A dramatic three-run double by Fran Healy in the eighth inning and three-run homer by Willie McCovey in ninth enabled the red-hot Giants to defeat the Cubs, 8-7. The Cubs were leading, 8-2, when McCovey singled and Dick Dietz walked in the eighth. Phil Regan replaced Ken Holtzman and passed Al Gallagher. Healy then batted for Hal Lanier and doubled for his seventh hit in eight times at bat this season.

In the ninth, after Ron Tompkins walked Tito Fuentes and Willie Mays, the Cubs called on Earl Stephenson, who got one strike on McCovey before the Giants' slugger smashed his homer. Ron Santo hit his second homer of the game in the Cubs' half of the ninth. [The Sporting News]
