With Mike Cuellar pitching a four-hitter, the Orioles gained a 5-2 victory and reduced the Red Sox lead to three games in the East division. Reggie Smith homered after a walk to Doug Griffin to give the Red Sox a 2-1 lead in the third inning, but Brooks Robinson tied the count with a circuit clout in the fourth and the Orioles went ahead in the same stanza when Paul Blair and Elrod Hendricks singled and Mark Belanger lofted a sacrifice fly.
