The Phillies were held to only one hit by Gary Nolan, but it was a homer by Denny Doyle after a pass to Deron Johnson in the second inning and beat the Reds, 2-1. Nolan was lifted for a pinch-hitter after hurling seven innings and the Phillies collected one more hit, a single by Joe Lis, off Wayne Granger in the eighth.

Rick Wise, who was the winner, yielded the Reds' run in the fifth on an infield hit by Lee May, double by Bernie Carbo and sacrifice fly by Tommy Helms. [The Sporting News]
