After scoring five runs in the first inning, the Senators lost their lead but then came back to defeat the Red Sox, 8-6. Frank Howard hit his first homer at Fenway Park since 1969, connecting with a man on base, to feature the Nats' opening burst.

However, the Red Sox picked up a run in their half and went ahead with five more in the third on circuit clouts by Carl Yastrzemski and Billy Conigliaro. The Senators tied the score in the sixth and went ahead again to stay when Joe Foy and Paul Casanova hit doubles in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
