The Reds scored seven runs in the first two innings to enable Ross Grimsley to defeat the Pirates, 7-4, for his first major league victory. Errors by Bob Robertson and Dave Cash in the first inning and another by Bob Moose in the second helped the Reds, who scored their last run on a homer by Johnny Bench.

Charlie Sands and Roberto Clemente each hit a homer for the Pirates with a man on base. Sands' smash was the first of his major league career. [The Sporting News]
