Jim Bunning's first relief appearance of the season was spoiled when the Mets scored an unearned run with two out in the 12th inning to beat the Phillies, 5-4. The Mets tied the score at 4-4 in the fifth on a balk by Ken Reynolds, who made his first major league start. Bunning took over in the ninth.

Tim Foli was safe on an error by Larry Bowa to open the 12th and Tommie Agee walked. Agee was forced by Donn Clendenon and Foli was thrown out at the plate on a grounder by Cleon Jones, but Bob Aspromonte then singled to drive in Clendenon with the winning run. [The Sporting News]
