. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Julian Javier and Jerry McNertney collected seven hits between them and accounted for six runs batted in to lead the Cardinals to a 9-4 victory over the Cubs. In the seventh inning, with the Cubs leading, 4-3, Javier put the Cardinals ahead with a two-run single for his fourth hit of the game and McNertney followed with a homer.

McNertney, who caught because Ted Simmons was attending his father's funeral in Dresden, Tenn., drove in two earlier runs with a pair of singles. The victory moved the Cards into first place in the N. L. East. [The Sporting News]
