Chris Speier and Willie Mays, who hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning, each drove a run across the plate in the ninth to enable the Giants to defeat the Dodgers, 6-4. Mays started the night with a single and scored on a homer by Dick Dietz. After the socks by Speier and Mays in the fifth, the Dodgers rallied to tie the score with the aid of a single by Maury Wills for his 2,000th major league hit.

In the Giants' ninth, George Foster singled and, when Jimmy Rosario bunted, both runners were safe on Joe Moeller's throwing error. Speier then broke the tie with a single and Mays added an extra run with a sacrifice fly. [The Sporting News]
