. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Jim Merritt, a 20-game winner in 1970, was pinned with his seventh straight defeat when the Pirates beat the Reds, 5-2. The Pirates scored twice in the first inning on a single by Dave Cash, walk to Roberto Clemente, double by Willie Stargell and infield out by Bob Robertson.

Clemente homered with a man on base in the second and Manny Sanguillen added a run with a round-tripper in the fifth. The victory was the Pirates' first over Merritt in eight decisions, including a championship playoff game last season. [The Sporting News]
