Catfish Hunter, who had won eight straight games, was stopped on his streak by the Yankees, who took opener of a doubleheader, 5-3, but the Athletics came back to gain a 6-3 victory in the nightcap. The Yankees tagged Hunter for two runs in the second inning on a triple by Jerry Kenney, double by Gene Michael and single by Jake Gibbs. John Ellis then provided the winning blow, hitting a homer with two men on base in the fifth.

The A's broke a 2-2 tie in the second game with three runs in the fifth. Bert Campaneris was safe on an error and scored on singles by Joe Rudi and Tommy Davis.
