Ray Culp drove in the decisive run in the ninth inning before needing help himself as the Red Sox defeated the Yankees, 3-2, to end their five-game losing streak and regain first place in the East division by four percentage points over the idle Orioles. In the ninth, Duane Josephson doubled and scored on a single by Culp to put the Red Sox ahead, 3-1.

Culp was removed after Horace Clarke doubled in the Yankees' half. Sparky Lyle took over and struck out Thurman Munson, but Bobby Murcer singled, scoring Clarke. When Roy White followed with a single, Bobby Bolin relieved and saved the game, getting the last two outs. [The Sporting News]
