The first pitcher in the N. L. to win 10 games this season, Steve Carlton worked out of turn for the Cardinals and matched his 1970 victory total by defeating the Pirates, 7-1. Last year, the southpaw had a 10-19 record.

Mike Torrez was to have started, but Carlton volunteered because the Cards had lost the first two games of the series with the Pirates. Carlton not only pitched a seven-hitter, but drove in two runs with a double. [The Sporting News]
