Ken Holtzman, pitching with only one day of rest after his no-hitter against the Reds, made his first relief appearance of the season in a move that failed when Mike Lum smashed a three-run homer in the 11th inning to give the Braves a 6-4 victory over the Cubs. The Braves sent the game into overtime when Sonny Jackson hit for the circuit in the ninth.

The Cubs went ahead with a run in the 11th, but Marty Perez and Jackson singled in the Braves' half around an infield out by pinch-hitter Hank Aaron. Holtzman then replaced Phil Regan and retired Ralph Garr on a grounder, but Lum followed with his drive that cleared the outstretched glove of leaping Jim Hickman and sailed into the stands in right field.
